Privacy Policy
Last updated: 17 April 2026
Your privacy matters. This is a smart home services business built on self-hosted, privacy-first principles. This policy explains how we collect, use, and protect your personal data in compliance with the UK GDPR and Data Protection Act 2018.
1. Data Controller
Tech Liberation is a trading name of AJ Consulting. AJ Consulting is the data controller responsible for your personal data.
Contact: [email protected]
AJ Consulting is registered with the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ICO). Our ICO registration number will be displayed here once the Tech Liberation trading name is reflected on the register.
2. Services Covered
This policy applies to all services provided under the Tech Liberation trading name, including:
- On-site smart home installations — surveys, installations, and follow-up visits, available in South Wales and surrounding areas
- Remote support — configuration, troubleshooting, and guidance sessions, available UK-wide
- Self-install kits — hardware supply with remote setup support
- Managed monitoring and maintenance — ongoing retainers for patching, backups, and uptime monitoring
- The techliberation.uk website — enquiries and contact submissions
3. Data We Collect
3.1 Contact & Enquiry Data
| Data Type | Purpose | Legal Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Name | Identification and communication | Contract / legitimate interest |
| Email address | Quotes, confirmations, support | Contract performance |
| Phone number | On-site arrangements, urgent support | Legitimate interest |
| Postal address | On-site survey eligibility, installation visits | Contract performance |
3.2 Installation & Service Data
| Service | Data Collected | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Site surveys | Property details (size, layout, existing wiring, Wi-Fi coverage, existing smart devices) | Accurate quoting and install planning |
| Installations | Photos of installed hardware, device inventory, configuration notes | Warranty, aftercare, and handover documentation |
| Remote support | Screen-share recordings (only where explicitly agreed), chat transcripts, configuration snapshots | Support delivery and issue history |
| Managed monitoring | Device uptime, patch status, backup verification results | Service delivery under retainer |
| Network topology | Router/switch details, VLAN layout, Home Assistant configuration | Required to deliver the service; treated as sensitive |
Network and configuration data is treated as sensitive. We do not share it with third parties. Access is limited to the technician delivering your service and is revoked when the engagement ends.
3.3 Website & Automatically Collected Data
- IP address and browser information (for security and error logging)
- Geolocation coordinates if you grant browser geolocation permission (used only for the on-page weather widget; not stored by us). The browser returns precise latitude and longitude — typically accurate to within a few hundred metres — and these coordinates are sent unmodified to Open-Meteo (for the weather data) and to OpenStreetMap Nominatim (to resolve the coordinates to a city name for display).
- Server access logs (retained for 90 days)
We do not use tracking cookies, advertising cookies, or third-party analytics (no Google Analytics, no Meta pixel, no similar services).
3.4 Third-Party Services Used by This Website
| Service | Purpose | Data Shared |
|---|---|---|
| Cloudflare | CDN, DDoS protection, tunnel to our UK-based server | IP address, request metadata |
| Open-Meteo | Public weather data for the site's weather widget | Your browser-provided coordinates (only if geolocation is granted); otherwise none. Governed by the Open-Meteo privacy policy. |
| OpenStreetMap (Nominatim) | Reverse-geocoding the weather-widget coordinates to a human-readable city name | Your browser-provided coordinates (only if geolocation is granted). Nominatim is operated by the OpenStreetMap Foundation (OSMF); your request is subject to the OSMF privacy policy. |
This website does not load webfonts from third-party hosts. Typography falls back to the operating-system default sans-serif stack, so no data is sent to Google Fonts or any other font CDN when you view these pages.
4. How We Use Your Data
Your data is used to:
- Respond to enquiries, provide quotes, and arrange site surveys
- Plan, deliver, and support installations and services
- Process payments and issue invoices
- Send service-related communications (appointment confirmations, support follow-ups, warranty notices)
- Maintain records required by law (tax, warranty, insurance)
We will never use your data for unsolicited marketing without your explicit consent, and we do not sell, rent, or trade personal data.
5. AI and Automated Processing
Tech Liberation does not process customer personal data using AI systems. Any AI we use internally (for scheduling suggestions, draft content, or diagnostics) runs on our own local infrastructure and does not operate on customer data.
6. Data Sharing
We do not sell your personal data. We share data only where necessary:
- Payment processors — Stripe or equivalent, for billing only. Processors see payment details, not installation data.
- Hardware suppliers — delivery name and address when ordering equipment to be shipped directly to you (if you request this).
- Legal obligations — if required by law, court order, or regulator.
- Insurers — in the event of a warranty claim or incident, where necessary.
7. Data Storage & Security
Your data is stored on infrastructure located in the United Kingdom, operated by AJ Consulting. We apply:
- Encryption in transit (HTTPS/TLS) for all web traffic
- Encryption at rest on servers holding customer records
- Access controls — only the technician working your job sees your network/configuration data
- Secure password hashing (bcrypt or equivalent) for any account systems
- Regular backups with verified restore tests
We do not transfer your data outside the UK or EEA without appropriate safeguards.
8. Data Retention
| Data Type | Retention Period |
|---|---|
| Enquiries that do not lead to a contract | 12 months from last contact |
| Site survey and quote records | 2 years |
| Installation records and handover docs | Duration of warranty + 2 years |
| Remote support session data | 6 months unless under active retainer |
| Managed monitoring logs | Duration of retainer + 90 days |
| Payment and tax records | 7 years (UK legal requirement) |
| Web server logs | 90 days |
9. Your Rights (UK GDPR)
Under UK GDPR, you have the right to:
- Access: request a copy of your personal data
- Rectification: correct inaccurate data
- Erasure: request deletion of your data (subject to legal retention)
- Restrict processing: limit how we use your data
- Data portability: receive your data in a machine-readable format
- Object: object to processing based on legitimate interests
- Withdraw consent: where processing is based on consent
To exercise these rights, email [email protected]. We respond within 30 days.
10. Cookies and Local Storage
The techliberation.uk website does not set tracking or advertising cookies.
When the cookie & third-party API consent banner (introduced by card TL-04) is shown, your consent choice is stored in your own browser using first-party localStorage under the key tl_consent_v1. This is not a cookie, is not transmitted to our server, and no data leaves your device. Clearing your browser's site data for techliberation.uk removes it.
If and when we introduce functional cookies for any other purpose, we will update this policy before doing so.
11. Children's Privacy
Our services are intended for adults (18+). We do not knowingly collect personal data from children. If a smart home installation takes place at a property where minors live, we do not record personal data about those minors; any device-related data is tied to the account holder.
12. Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy as our services evolve. Significant changes will be notified by email to active customers and reflected on this page. The "Last updated" date at the top shows when changes were made.
