Terms of Service
Last updated: 17 April 2026
Welcome. These terms govern the services we provide under the Tech Liberation trading name, and any use of the techliberation.uk website. By requesting a quote, engaging us for work, or purchasing a self-install kit, you agree to these terms.
1. Who We Are
Tech Liberation is a trading name of AJ Consulting, based in the United Kingdom. In these terms, "we", "us", and "our" refer to AJ Consulting trading as Tech Liberation. "You" and "your" refer to the customer.
2. Services
We provide privacy-focused smart home services, delivered through four channels:
- On-site installations — site surveys, hardware supply, installation, configuration, and handover. Available in South Wales and surrounding areas, subject to travel time.
- Remote support — configuration, troubleshooting, and guidance sessions conducted via screen-share, phone, or chat. Available UK-wide.
- Self-install kits — hardware supplied by us with a remote setup call included. Available UK-wide.
- Managed monitoring and maintenance — ongoing monthly retainers for patching, backup verification, and uptime monitoring of installed systems.
Geographic scope: on-site visits are limited to South Wales and reasonable travelling distance. Remote services are available throughout the United Kingdom. We do not currently serve customers outside the UK.
3. Quotes and Site Surveys
- Written quotes are valid for 30 days from issue unless otherwise stated.
- On-site surveys for installations over a defined project value are free; smaller jobs may incur a fixed survey fee, disclosed before the visit.
- A quote is an estimate based on information provided. If site conditions, property scope, or hardware choices change before work begins, we will issue a revised quote for your approval.
- Work only begins after you accept the quote in writing (email is sufficient).
4. Hardware
4.1 Hardware We Supply
- Hardware supplied by us is new unless explicitly agreed otherwise.
- Title in hardware passes to you once payment for that hardware has cleared.
- Manufacturer warranties apply in addition to our service warranty (see section 9).
4.2 Customer-Supplied Hardware ("Bring Your Own")
- We will install and configure hardware you already own, provided it is compatible with a self-hosted setup and in working order.
- We are not responsible for defects, failures, or compatibility issues in customer-supplied hardware.
- If customer-supplied hardware proves unsuitable on site, we will advise on alternatives; additional time or equipment is quoted separately.
5. Payment Terms
| Service | Payment Structure |
|---|---|
| Installations under £500 | Payable in full on completion |
| Installations £500 and over | 50% deposit on acceptance, balance on completion |
| Installations £2,500 and over | Milestone schedule agreed in the quote |
| Remote support | Payable in advance or on completion, by agreement |
| Self-install kits | Payable in full before dispatch |
| Managed monitoring retainers | Monthly in advance |
- Prices are in GBP and inclusive of VAT where applicable (we will state the VAT position in each quote).
- Payments are processed securely; we currently accept bank transfer and card payments via Stripe or equivalent.
- Late payment on invoices may attract statutory interest under the Late Payment of Commercial Debts (Interest) Act 1998 where the customer is a business.
6. Cancellation and Rescheduling
- Consumer cancellation rights: where you are a consumer, you have a 14-day right to cancel from the date of contract under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013, except where work has already been carried out at your request within that period (in which case a proportionate charge for work done is payable).
- Rescheduling by you: please give at least 48 hours' notice. Late rescheduling may forfeit part of a deposit to cover reserved time.
- Rescheduling by us: we will reschedule free of charge and agree a new date with you. If we cancel entirely, any deposit paid is refunded in full.
- Retainers: managed monitoring retainers run month-to-month and may be cancelled with 30 days' notice.
7. Access, Property, and Safety
- You are responsible for providing safe, timely access to the property and to any cabinets, lofts, or spaces needed for installation.
- You confirm that you have the right to authorise installation work (for example, as owner or with the owner's permission if renting).
- We will take reasonable care of your property; any accidental damage caused by us will be remedied or compensated.
- If site conditions are unsafe (live exposed wiring, structural hazards, etc.), we may decline or pause work until the hazard is addressed.
8. Your Responsibilities
You agree to:
- Provide accurate information about your property, network, and existing equipment
- Keep account credentials for any self-hosted services you operate secure after handover
- Not attempt to resell the specific implementation as a "Tech Liberation" service to third parties
- Use the installed systems lawfully and reasonably
9. Warranty
- Workmanship: our installation and configuration work is warranted for 12 months from handover. If a fault arises from our work in that period, we will remedy it at no cost.
- Hardware supplied by us: covered by the manufacturer's warranty; we will facilitate claims on your behalf.
- Managed monitoring retainers: service levels are stated in the relevant retainer agreement.
- The warranty does not cover damage caused by misuse, unauthorised modifications, third-party repairs, power events, or changes you make to the system after handover.
10. Self-Hosted Systems — Important Disclosures
Self-hosted smart home systems offer privacy and independence, but come with realistic limits. We want you to understand them before engaging us.
- Systems rely on your home internet and electricity. If these fail, the system is affected.
- After-handover updates to Home Assistant, firmware, or third-party integrations are not within our control. Under a managed retainer we handle this for you; without a retainer it is your responsibility.
- Replacement parts for consumer-grade smart home hardware can be subject to market availability.
- We do not guarantee indefinite compatibility with external services (for example, a streaming platform that later changes its API).
11. Intellectual Property
- The Tech Liberation name, website content, written materials, and configuration scripts we produce remain our property.
- You receive a perpetual, non-exclusive licence to use configuration artefacts produced for your installation, within your own home.
- You may not republish, resell, or redistribute our materials without written permission.
12. Limitation of Liability
Nothing in these terms limits our liability for:
- Death or personal injury caused by our negligence
- Fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation
- Any other liability that cannot be limited under English law
Subject to the above, our total liability for any claim arising from a service shall not exceed the amount you paid us for that service in the 12 months preceding the claim. We are not liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential losses, including loss of profit, business interruption, or loss of data held on your self-hosted systems.
13. Insurance
AJ Consulting carries appropriate business insurance covering the work carried out under the Tech Liberation trading name. Certificates of insurance are available on request.
14. Termination
We may suspend or terminate services if:
- You materially breach these terms (including non-payment)
- We reasonably believe your instructions would require us to act unlawfully
- Continuing work would put our team or your property at risk
On termination, you pay for any work completed up to the termination date. Data retention continues as set out in the Privacy Policy.
15. Complaints
If something goes wrong, please contact us first at [email protected]. We aim to acknowledge complaints within 2 working days and resolve them within 14 working days where possible.
16. Changes to These Terms
We may update these terms from time to time. The "Last updated" date shows the current version. Material changes affecting active customers will be communicated by email. Your continued use of our services after a change constitutes acceptance of the updated terms.
17. Governing Law and Jurisdiction
These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales. Any disputes are subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.
18. Severability
If any provision of these terms is found to be unenforceable, the remaining provisions continue in full force and effect.
